How to Prevent Computer Vision Syndrome & Get a Healthy Eyesight

These days computer vision syndrome (CVS) has a very prevalent grasp in the human body. It is also called digital eye strain. The continued exposure of the eyes to digital screens is the main reason behind issues like cloudy vision, double vision, and many more.

What Causes Computer Vision Syndrome?

Uninterrupted and prolonged use of digital screens like computers, mobile phones, etc. for work, study, entertainment, etc. is causing a set of special eye problems in the human eye. These are called CVS or digital eye strain. Due to long working hours, we blink less than the times we should do normally. Generally, we blink 16 to 20 times in a minute. But when we work on computers the frequency reduces to 6 to 8 times per minute. When we look at the screen we keep our eyes wide open for a long time. It dries up the tear film and causes dry eyes.

Also, unlike the printed letters the digital letters have well-defined edges. They also lack contrast which altogether brings discomfort in the eye and difficulties in staying focused on the digital screen. When we repeatedly refocus on the characters it leads to fatigue, strain, and burning in the eye along with the pink eye. And poor lighting further deteriorates the CVS problems.

In addition to the above reasons, CVS can have other reasons as well and these are:

  • Inappropriate posture while sitting and working on the computer
  • Bad lights that produce glares, unusually bright or dim images
  • Less frequent blinks and not moisturizing the surface of the eyes
  • Wearing wrong eyeglasses while exposed to computer screens
  • Inappropriate color of the walls in the room
  • A straight air blow on the eyes from the air-conditioner
  • Anti-reflective coating etc.

So if you are someone who is bound to work on computers for a long time and have issues with vision, reach out to the top eye specialist in Mumbai for prevention and cure of CVS.

What are the Indications of Computer Vision Syndrome?

For all the people who use digital displays frequently or who overuse them, it's very important to learn the signs and symptoms of CVS. Staying alert and maintaining the precautions for CVS also can prevent permanent damage to the eyesight. The common signs and symptoms of CVS are:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye-heaviness
  • Feeling strain in the eyes while using digital screen
  • Multiple vision
  • Headache during working hours
  • Discomfort or irritation in the eyes
  • Neck or shoulder pain while working
  • Nausea during working hours
  • Dizziness while using a computer etc.

How to Prevent Computer Vision Syndrome?

Prevention of CVS is possible. It's not a big deal but you have to be cautious and know some basic tricks. These are:

  • Push the computer screen down to fit it 4-8 inches below your eyes. The distance between your eyes and the screen must be 20-28 inches.
  • Keep the lights on to minimize the harsh reflections and glare. Using a filter for glares on the screen also works well.
  • Put a document holder next to and close to the computer screen so that you don't have to change your focus or move your head back and forth.
  • Low humidity or fumes makes the dry eye condition worse.
  • Keep in mind to blink more or whenever your eyes feel irritated or are drying up.
  • Take frequent breaks from looking at the computer. Make a routine of looking away every 20 mins beyond 20 feet and blink 20 times at that time.
  • You can also use artificial tears to lubricate your eyes if needed. But before using it, ask your doctor.

Is CVS Serious or Permanent?

Fortunately not. But if the symptoms are not taken care of then they can cause permanent damage to the eyes. Although CVS is less likely to cause vision loss, it's better to treat the early symptoms and avoid the pain later. Also, by following the tricks mentioned above you can prevent the coming of computer vision syndrome.
