Squint, also known as strabismus, is a medical condition that affects the alignment of the eyes. It occurs when the muscles that control the eye movement don't work together properly, causing one eye to look straight ahead while the other eye turns inward, outward, up, or down. This misalignment can cause double vision, blurred vision, and depth perception problems.
Children are particularly susceptible to developing squint, but it can occur at any age. Squints in children can be caused due to several factors, including genetics, nerve problems, and eye muscle disorders.
Types of Squint
There are four main types of strabismus, each of which is characterized depending on the direction of the misaligned eye.
- Hypertropia: in this condition, one eye is centrally focused while the other eye turns upwards.
- Hypotropia: in this condition, one eye is centrally focused while the other eye turns downwards.
- Esotropia: in this condition, one eye is centrally focused while the other eye turns inwards.
- Exotropia: in this condition, one eye is centrally focused while the other eye turns outwards.
An early diagnosis of strabismus is crucial as it can lead to a range of vision problems. Strabismus treatment typically involves glasses, vision therapy, or surgery. Treatment up to the age of 6 years is believed to be most effective, but strabismus can be treated at any age.
Symptoms of Squint in Children
It is quite easy to detect when a child is suffering from a squint, as one eye may appear to see in a different direction from the other. In some cases, squint may be less noticeable. However, parents or caretakers can look for signs such as squinting due to bright light or tilting their head to see properly, or complaining about blurry or double vision.
A child with strabismus may experience difficulty with depth perception, eye strain, and headaches. They may also have a tendency to trip or bump into things, especially if their eyes are misaligned while looking at objects in motion. If you or someone you know has symptoms of squint, ensure that you consult a squint specialist in Mumbai for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
An early diagnosis of strabismus is important as it can lead to a range of vision problems, such as amblyopia or lazy eye.
A Lazy eye is an eye condition where the brain starts ignoring signals from one eye in order to avoid double vision. In case a child has poor vision in the affected eye, he/she can simply wear an eye patch over the other eye for vision development.
